COWARDLY ASSAULT
CONSTABLE ATTACKED AT MIDNIGHT.
Three roughs made a cowardly assault on Constable R. Murphy, of the Central Police Station, while he was on duty in Hawkestone Street at midnight on Friday. The men, itl is reported, were making nuisances of them selves by crea - ing a. disturbance, and instead of taking sterner measures tho constable chose to° remonstrate quietly with them in tho hope that they would go home. Ho received little thanks for his forbearance Ono of the trio seized him by the arm, another hit him on the back of the head, and the third assisted in lhe tussle 'that) followed. 'Constable Murphv was thrown heavily on to the gravel'of the road, and hie attackers bolted. Luckily his injuries were nos at all serious, though he was slightly stunned for a time.
