PATEA BY-ELECTION
MR. MASSEY’S COMMENT
ANOTHER POINT OF VIEW
"I expected Mr. Dixon io win. and I naturally am pleased at the result of the election,” said rhe Prime Minister (Mr. Massey) yesterday in comment upon the Patea by-election. "Mr. Dixon is a man of much more than avereage ability, but his principal opponent luto rhe advantage of being a. farmer, whic n in an agricultural district means a great deal. I think, in the circumstances, the new member did well, and I predict that his constituents will have good reason to be satisfied* with him. The leader of the Liberal Party, Mr. T. M. Wilford, said that the Reform candidate had won the seat on a minority vote polling 2620 votes as against 2890 votes cast for the Liberal and.labour candidates. “Tito Holland Party ” he added, "has assisted Mr. Massey to gain a minority victory, and, without doubt, the Holland Party is becoming the asset of the Massey Party in any by-election -which may eventuate. 'lhe Liberal Party realises that, even if it does not at once obtain office, it will deserve well of the country if it keeps the Holland Party from office, which it tun do by remaining the compact and growing party it has become in. the last few months.’*
