WHEAT CROP SURPLUS
PURCHASE BY GOVERNMENT
REPORTED TO BE UNDER CONSIDERATION
By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, April It.
The purchase of the wheat crop surplus by fhe Government is reported to lie under consideration. No authoritative statement can be obtained, but the matter is being freely discussed by farmers and oilhers interested. A scheme is under consideration, it is said, whereby the purchase can be effected. If it is carried into operation, the Government will take over all the surplus of the new wheat crop at ruling rates, which previously had been fixed at from 7s. 6d.- to Bs. a bushel, with a monthly increase of 3s. 4d. per bushel -from May 1 next. The idea of the purchase is io relieve farmers of a surplus of which they have been unable to clear themselves and to assist them financially. It is submitted that, the present stringency in commercial circles should be relieved if Purchase is carried out.
