SHOP ASSISTANTS’ AWARD

NO DOMINION CONFERENCE.

Recently the secretary of the Shop Assistants’ Federation (Mr. A. W. Croskery) wrote to the secretary of the New Zealand Federation of Drapers and Clothiers suggesting that a Dominion conference should be held with a view to drawing up a new agreement to take the place of the Wellington shop assistants’ award, which has expired. Mr. Croskery has received the following reply: "We represent only one section of the employers concerned in the Wellington awaid, and it would be presumption on our part to arrange a conference without consulting the interests of tho numerous other parties and other trades concerned. It would further be impossible for me to represent the other employers concerned, for as far as we know they are not organised .in-tho same way. as we are? In view of “these circumstances, the executive of the federation regrets ’that it 'cannot see its way to accept your suggestion for a Dominion conference.”

The Wellington dispute will in all probability be filed next week. The Christchurch shop assistants’ dispute will bo beard in the Conciliation Council on April 26, 28, 29, and. ML
