TRENTHAM RACES

THOMPSON HANDICAP WON BY ROUEN DUO WINS THE ST. LEGER SILVER LINK DEFEATS RATIONAL t' OPEN SPRINT TO SILVER PEAK. The weather was fine but dull tor the opening day of the autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club. The few light showers that fell overnight took the sting out of the ground, and left the track in*a very fast state. The attendance was quite up to the average, and speculation was greater than last year. The figures for the day were £56,923, against £53,734 for the corresponding day last year. Amongst those present were Sir Francis Bell, the Hon. J. G. Coates, Mr. T. M. AVilford, Sir James Carroll, ■Sir George Clifford, and Messrs. W. G. Stead, J. S. M’Leod, W. Stone, A. M'Donald. G. D. Greenwood, G. M. Currie, J. G. Barrett, W. R Kemball, A Alexander, R. A. and L.. M'Kenzie, H. B. Gibson, G D. Beatson, and other leading sportsmen from all parts of the Dominion. The racing was of the usual fine order generally associated with meetings on the Trentham course. »The finishes in the majority of cases were very close, and seldom has the club’s handicapper (Mr. H. Coyle) done finer work. The track was in a fast state, and during the day an Australasian record was broken, while all the other events were Tun in fast time. The day’s racing passed off without a hitch of any kind, and a very pleasing feature was the promptitude with which the events were started. Secretary A. E. Whyte and his assistant, Mr. J. Griffiths, had everything in smooth working order. THE RACING DESCRIBED.

The four acceptors all went to the post for the Jumpers’ Flat Handicap, and the betting was surprisingly even. Lord Nagar and Fisher led the other-pair for six furlongs, when Fisher was steadied. Entering the straight the four were in a line, but in the run to the post Fisher forged ahead, and won by a length from Lord Nagar. King Star was a neok away, and Whipcord finished right up. Rente was taken out of the St. Leger, and as Gasbag had not done sufficient to please his trainer, the public laid odds on Duo. Lietowel made play with the favourite for twelve furlongs, when the latter foTged ahead. Gasbag made an effort at the distance, but the leader held his own, and won comfortably in 2min. 57 4-ssec., which is an Australasian record for the distance. Ltetowel surprised everybody by running so prominently, but Halifax failed badly. Pluto, Danger Zone, and Sleeping Beauty were scratched for the Nursery Handicap, and the public went heavily for Absurduni and Purple Spur. The favourites drew tho outer, but was in charge on the fence before two furlongs had been covered, and after that Gray was sitting still and watching the others. Entering the straight Thespian was in second place, but he did not finish well, and both Creme de Menthe and Prince Fcrouz headed him in the run to the, post. Anomaly got away badly, but finished fifth close up. Early Dawn, Silver Link, and Miss Mimic were taken out of the Thompson Handicap. Rouen was the actual favourite in a great betting race. Parisian Diamond also having a very heavy following. From a good start Golden Bubble, Askari, and Royal Stag took charge, while Bonetter and Bagdad were cut off. Down the back the positions were the same, but Parisian Diamond was checked several times. At the halimile Askari was a length out from Golden Bubble and Royal Stag. Entering the straight the field bunched, and the collours of Foo Chow, Solfanella, Tigritiya, and Rouen became prominent. A furlong from home Rouen joined Askari, and in a stirring finish Gray punched his horse out and got up .on the post to win by a head. Bagdad came with a great rattle, and cut Golden Bubble out of third place. Truthful, Tigritiya, and Solfanella were all close up. Rational and Silver Link were evenly backed for the Challenge Stakes, while Pluto also carried over four figures. Rational was not long in getting to the front, and followed by Pluto and Silver Link he ran past the half-mile post with a two lengths break. He was still in charge entering ihe straight, where Pluto was dispiaced by Silver Link. She challenged the leader at the distance, and after a great finish beat him by a head. Pluto was three lengths away.

Egotism was a better favourite than Sunny Loch in the Apprentices’ Handicap, but the weight beat her at the finish, while after a severe struggle with Malaga Sunny Loch won by a nose. Vindictive set a fast pace into the straight, but Sunny Loch was always 'handy, and his performance was full of merit. There was a big field in tho Railway Handicap. Speculation was divided between Chrysostom, Inah, Canyon, and Early Dawn. Inah was soon in front, .and with Canyon, Early Dawn, and Chrysostom she led on to the course proper. She was clear at the distance, but shortly afterwards Silver Peak came through, and in the run home she won by a length from Inah, who beat Chrysostom by a neck. Canyon was fourth, and Astinomo fifth. There were several withdrawals from the concluding event, Mosthenes, Poseday, and Fabrinade being backed in that order. The last-named began smartly, and led till the last furlong, where Mosthenes joined in and soon Leaded him off. The favourite won comfortably from Makere, who finished well and beat Fabrinade by a head. Roseday was fourth. DETAILED RESULTS.
