MEAT WAR IN THE MANAWATU

PRICES COMING DOWN,

(From Our Own Corresnondenll ) Palmerston North, April 7.

Meat auctions were continued to-dlay when prices showed a decided tendency to ease off, and in most cases they are in favour of buyers as compared with what butchers are asking for the same, quality of meat. 2 At a sale of dealers’ mutton a good lino of 601 b. 2-tooth wethers averaged 17s. per head—under 3]d. per At another safe fair quality ewes made from 14s. to 15s.—an average of about 3Jd. per lb. At the second sale of the Kairanga Auctioneering Company, on behalf of farmers, where nearly all the meat offered was in jointls suitable for household purposes a clearance was made at prices slightly below' those ruling at Iho previous sale. The following are quotations:—Mutton by the ciarcass, 3}d.* per lb.; hindquarters. 4Jd.; forequarters, 3(1. to 3Jd.; loins, 4d. to 4Jd. Lamb—Hindquarters, sd. and forequarters, -Id. BeefSirloin, 4d. to 41d.; top side, 3jd. to 41-d.; ribs, 4d. to 6d.: rump steak, 4d. to 53.; beef eteak, 2-Jd. in 4d.; gravy beef, 2d. silverside, 2d. to 3jd.; brisket, IJd.’to 2d., and skins Is. each. It is understood that' a meeting of farmers will be held to consider the position, and to consider a scheme for marketing their' sheep direct without iho middleman who in the past has had much tills best of the deal. In the mean time the public is reaping the benefit of the fight between the growers and the trade.
