AUTUMN MEETING AT TRENTHAM TO-DAY’S* PROSPECTS. Given fine weather a large attendance is expected at Trantham to-day . Particulars of the train arrangements will bo found in our advertising columns. Racing will commence at noon with the Jumpers’ Flat Handicap, which has only drawn an acceptance oi four horses. January form at I rent hum would point to King Star, who is a bettor stayer than Fisher and Lord Nagar The two last mimed will be better' suited with the sting out of the 81 There will be five runners in the New Zealand St. Leger, and most interest will be taken in the contest between Duo and Gasbag. The pair have met three times previously, and on each occasion Duo has defeated his rival by a narrow margin. He may do so to-day, prortding ho is not sore. The ronnections of Gasbag are confident he will do be to “ as he is a much improved Handicap. l»t •"

era! smart youngsters engaged, notably Anomaly, Absurdum, Thespian and Purple Spur. The last named is stated to be a top-notcher, and in a recent tryout with Winning Hit ho beat the Champagne Stakes winner by a dozen lengths. If he gets away well to-day ho should be hard to beat. Absurdum is also smart, and at Trantham yesterday, his rider had difficulty in keeping him -back to Truthful at the end of half a mile. The probable starters and riders in the Thompson Handicap are: — Alarqueteur, 9st. 41b. (A. Af'Cormac).

Alaioha, 9st. 411>s. (R, S. Bagby). Silver Link, 9st. 31b. (A .J. M'Flinn). Parisian Diamond, Bst. 111 b. (IV. Bell) Foo Chow, Bst. Ulb. (F. Porter). Tigritiya, Bst 101 b. (R. Reed). Miss Mimic, Sst. 81b. (H. Young). Solfanello, Bst. 71b. (L. Morris). Rouen, Bst 31b. (H. Gray). Bonetter/ Sst. lib. (J. O'Shea). Golden Bubble, 7st. 101 b. (A. Reed). Blackmail, 7st. 21b. (C. Reed). Truthful, 7st. 31'b. (F. Johnston). Esperance, 7st. 31b. (J. Hockley). Bagdad, 7st. (J. Dwyer). Askari, 6st. 91b. (H. Ryder). Handy, 6st. 71b. (R. Orange).

The mile event is considered very open and it is difficult to pick a starter that has no chance. ' /The going will be’ against Marqueteur, Molyneaux, Blackmail, Solfanello, and Bagdad. Mamba is such a consistent horse that he can--not be left out of calculations, while the brilliant Silver Link has her Ellerslie form to recomend her, though in. the past she has not done well on the Trantham course. The connections of Parisian Diamond regard the event as well within compass of the big gelding, Vho ran. a sterling race at Feilding when, not tuned up. In fact he had done no work for three days prior to the race. Foo Chow has been carrying .all before him in the South, but the handicapper may have found 'him out now. Tigritiya is regarded as one of the best handicap mares in commission to-day.' She is credited with being unlucky in tho Great Easter Handicap, and her collections regard her chances to-day very highly. Miss Mimic seems back to her best 2-year-old form, and on her chance, though at the difference in the figures Tigritiya should hold her safe. Rouen will have Gray in the saddle, but his public form does not suggest him as a Thompson Handicap winner. Bonnetter is at her best now, and has a chance. Golden Bubble will probably be troubled by the distance, and’ Truthful is a hard mare for a lightweight to ride. The best of the tail division seems to be Askari, who ran a first-class race in the Napier Cup and won in good style at Feilding. If Silver Link is. not started in the Thompson Handicap, she will be the most dangerous for Rational to dispose of in the North Island Challenge Stakes. The trainer of the 2-year-old does not fear the staying ability of the son of Absurd, as in a couple of gallops over six furlongs he went on well at the right end. . The Silveretream Handicap is tor apprentice riders. Egotism is an unlikely starter, and favouritism may rest with Malaga, who goes th.© distance well, and Strategy, though the last named has not yet tried to get eight furlongs. Sunny Loch may be one of the hardest to beat, as he runs on .well. Maioha, Golden Bubble, Blackmail, and Listowel are doubtful runners in the Railway Handicap. Chrysostom will put up 31bs. overweight to have R. e services. He, Inah (A. Reed), and Canyon (C. Reed) may be the best backed. Inph may tie the others in a.knot over the first half of the journey, and if so they may not relish finishing under such circircumstancee. . ~ There is not a first-class lot in the Tinakori Handicap. Egotism is to be ridden 'by Hatch, but she may not be able to concede 161bs to who is a very fast beginner. Mothenes is t be ridden by Gray, and looks very wel , tat his public form has not been good in the past.
