MAGISTRATE’S COURT

POLICE AND MAINTENANCE CASES. Mr. 11. W. Buudle, S.M., had a very small police charge sheet to deal with in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Richard Haves was; on the application of Chief-Detective Ward, remanded to Friday on a charge of stealing e-t Masterton ah overcoat, two pairs of gloves, and a white shirt, value «£lO Ils., the propety of John P. Toucher. Bail was allowed in .£lOO, and one surety of .£5O. William Hazlett was charged that at Waikanae he unlawfully and without coloui- of right, but not so as to be guilty of theft, converted io his own use a horse, saddle, and bridle. Hazlett rode away on a horse owned by the Hutt county roadman, but the local constable happened to recognise the animal, and stoped Hazlett, w-ho admitted taking it without authority. He was convicted, and fined .£5, in default three weeks imprisonment. A trimmer named John M'Donald, who had unlawfully absented himself from the s.s. Waimate, was ordered to be put aboard the vessel, which- is at present at Lyttelton. Fraaik M'Donald was fined 10s. for drunkenness, and for begging alms at the Lambton railway station he was fined <£3, with the option of three weeks imprisonment. . Joseph Johnston, who was convicted for. the seventh time for drunkenness, was sent to gaol for seven days, and a similar- sentence was passed in respect-to a breach of his prohibition order. For using obscene language in Lambton Quay, William John Lee was fined •10s., with the alternative of forty-eight hours’ imprisonment, and fox* drunkenness he was fined 10s. Thomas Blake was fined 205., in de-' fault forty-eight hours’ imprisonment, for drunkenness. MAINTENANCE CASES.

John Charles Fairman, who had allowed maintenance payments in respect to his children to fall into arrears to the extent of Ll2B 10s., was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, the warrant th be suspeded so long as 455. per week is paid. Tasman Henderson was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be held so long as he pays 255. per week.

Claude O’Leary' was ordered to pay 20s. per week towards the maintenance of his child.
