Everything augurs well for a successful opening of the autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club on Thursday next. The star items on the first day will be the Thompson Handicap, one mite, the North. Island Challenge Stakes, seven furlongs, and the New Zealand St. Leger, one mile and three-quarters. H. Gray arrived from Auckland yesterday. He has been engaged to ride Rouen in the Thompson Handicap on Thursday. The Avondale meeting will be concluded to-morrow.

North Island owners who intend being represented at the Ashburton meeting on May 12 and 13 should note that entries for all handicap events close on Monday, April 25. The club has made substantial increases to the stakes, and the programme is now an attractive one. The Ashburton Cup, run over a mile rnd a. quarter, carries a stake of 410 sovs., in addition to a silver cup value 40 sovs., given by Air. H. F. Nicoll, and the big event on the second day, the Autumn Handicap, one mile, is now worth 300 sovs. Sir George Clifford had a good lift up in the winning list at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, his horses winninr <£2530 in stakes. Mr. R. B. 'Lusk will do the judging at the Pakuranga Hunt Clnb meeting, Air. C. O’Connor the starting, and Air. F. W. Edwards the handicapping. The Reed brothers, Ashley, Roy, and Con who were riding at Avondale on Saturday, returned to Trentham yesterday. Evidently things were not as they should have been at the Feilding meeting, for, says the Feilding "Star, _ in commenting on the club’s recent meeting, a few persons, some of them palpaoly the worse for liquor, made the only regrettable feature of the day’s sport. Gathering round tho starting-nost for the test race, they kept up a fusillade of insulting and cheap remarks aimed ot the starter, endeavouring to embarrass the official who has the most difficult job of the whole business to carry through. It was plainly seen that one particular horse was carrying the monev of this coterie of ill-bred hoodlums. When their own fancy was well up to the barrier the starter was abusively urged to “let ’em go. It the had taken this advice, he would have sent some of the horses straivht at the grandstand and otheis round the course in the wrong direction. There is always a risk in getting the horses away, but the start proved to be a verv good ono. The finish was followed bv a more disgraceful episode. Beloved and Festivity ran a great race, the former winning by a head. Before the numbers indicating the placed horses had been hoisted, the pressmen had marked their books, Iteine in complete agreements as to the result, and 1 lie judges decision confirmed theirs. But it did not suit the hoodlums. They gathered round the entrance to the. birdcage and first vigorously hooted the boy mounted on Beloved who had ridden a particularly good race ’ The jockey looked somewhat puzzled at the scene, but the hoodlums quickly turned thoir attention to the judge and lioohooed for some minutes <heir only reason being- that they had iheir money on the herse which did not wm. It is rather a pity the law does not permit the removal of such persons from snorting resorts. There only remains to add that a large portion of the crowd applauded the judge by way of countering the demonstrators. ' The Pakuranga Hunt Club have fixed Mav II as the date for their annual race meeting, which is to be held at Ellerslie. The committee have drawn up a most attractive programme, a sum of ‘•°4oo being allotted in stake money, this a’mount being equally divided between the hunters and the open events, lhe Pakuranga. Hunt Cup, the most important event, caries a stake of 556 sovs., including a cup of the value of 50 soys., while the Jellicoe Handicap, the principal open race, is worth 460 sovs. htoininations for all events close with the secretary, Mr. W. S. Spence, on Inday, April 22. at 9 p.m.. and Mr. F. AV. Edwards will declare the weights on Friday, April 29. Those who favour the chances of Rouen in the Thompson Handicap on Thursday will be heartened by the fact that a private watch-holder made tho Pezonian gelding run the first mile of the Feilding Cup in Imin. 40sec. With receipts advancing under all headings in connection with meetings held at Ellerslie by the Auckland Racing Club, the amount paid in Government taxation has increased considerably. The payment made to the Government in tho shape of taxation over the recent autumn meet ing amounted to £16,576 4s. 5d., made up as follows:—Totalisator and privileges £.’>426 14s. Ud- dividend duty £4734 65., tax on prize money £l6B 10s.. amusements tax £306 13s. 6d. The total (ram so far pniil to the Government this season is £42 fWI 9s. Id., made up as follows: — Spring meeting £7427 135.. summer meetim» £24,986 11s. Bd.. autumn meeting .£■ H>.S7C> G. 5d-
