WAGES FOR HOLIDAY WORK
CLAIMS AGAINST NEWSPAPERS.

Claims in regard to wages duo for work performed on Anniversary Day or New Year’s Day were preferred against two newspaper proprietors at tho Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr. Af'Carthy, S.M. There were thirteen claims against the. "Lyttelton Times” Go. and twentytwo claims against the Christchurch "Press’ Co.
Mr. W. J. Hunter, who appeared for the plaintiffs, said that the claims arose regarding payment of the balance of wages duo in some cases for work on Anniversary Day and in others for work on New Year’s Day. Mr. A. G. Henderson appeared as representative of the "Lyttelton Times” Co., and Mr. P. Selig as representative ot the "Press” ’Co. Af.r. Henderson asked for an adjournment. The matter was one, he said, which affected newspaper proprietors all over the Dominion.
Air. M'Carthy: You will have to apply for leave to defend. Mr. Henderson: This is a case affecting the New Zealand Newspaper Proprietors’ Association arising out of the interpretation of an award.
Mr. M'Carthy: I shall grant an adjournment subject to the usual costs to counsel.
