SIGNIFICANCE OF LORD TALBOT’S APPOINTMENT
FIRST DUTY TO SUMMON PARLIAMENTS

Under the Home Rule Act, the first duty of the Viceroy wil be to summon the two Parliaments for .Southern and Northern Ireland. The appointment of Lord Talbot is significant, as he is tho leading lay Roman Catholic in the Kingdom, and also the first Roman Catholic to be appointed Viceroy of Ireland.—Reuter. London, April 1. The "Observer” says that the surprising selection of Lord Talbot for tho Irish Viceroyalty either mei'/fs hope for 0. new and thorough peace effort and a complete change of policy, or the nomination of an English Catholic involves an error worse than any previous one. The "Weekly Dispatch” considers the apointment of a leading English Catholic layman and skilled diplomat a most important step, because it synchronises with the Southern Unionists’ endeavour, through Cardinal Logue, to find a way to peace, and also with De Valera’s unexpected decision to participate in the election under Dominion Home Rule.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. POLICE RAID CLUB IN MANCHESTER FUSILLADE OF SHOTS ENCOUNTERED. London April 3. Arising out of attempts to 'burn down hotels, tho police raided a club in Erskine Street, Manchester. They encountered a fusillade of shots. Three of the police wore wounded, a civilian was killed, and another civilian dangerously wounded. Twenty arrests were made.—-Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. FIRE-RAISING IMPLEMENTS DISCOVERED. (Rec. April -4-, 5.5 p.m.) London April 3. Four police in the first instance visited the Erskine Street club in Manchester. Many fcrmed men opened fire forhwith. One wounded a poolicemn.n, whose comrade shot the assailant dead. Police scouts posted outside, hearing tho firing, sumoned reinforcements. A hun. dred police hastened to tho scene in taxi-cabs, and surrounded Mio club. Tho firing lasted n. hour. Captured documents showed that many inmates of the ,-club were active Sinn Feiners. Jars of kerosene, revolvers, and implements similar to those used in connection with hotel arsons were found, also a list of oil works, timber yards and other vulnerable industries in Manchester. —Aps.-N.Z. .Cable Assn. Cable Assn. STRANGE ACTION OF A POLICEMAN. London, April 2. Following the attack on the Rosscarbery Police Bararcks on March 31, a child found a 'bomb against the debris, and handed it to a policeman, who, finding the pin missing, threw it into the crowded street. Esmonds addressed a private meeting of the Self-Determination League at Vancouver, urging organisation. He declared that there were more Sinn Fein flags in Sydney Harbour than Union Jacks.
