PROVISION OF SUB-WAYS
AT SUBURBAN RAILWAY STATIONS
With reference to a recent communication by the City Council to the Minister of Railways regarding the construction of a subway at tlie Ngaio station (where many children have to cross theline 'Twice daily in order to get to school), the Right Hon. AV. F. Massey has replied ns follows: — "With reference to the representations as stated in your letter of March If-. I have the honour to inform you that the Department has for years befn in favour of extending facilities of this na-, hire, if the local body concerned bearsits portion of the cost.- If it is likely this will now be agreed to, I shall be pleased if you will direct the city engineer to consult with the Chief Engineer for Railways as to the most suitable arrangements for Ngaio so that plans may be prepared 'and estinur.es drawn up.” Speaking on this question the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) stated yesterday that the 1 council was of opinion that tho work was one that was required, and thev were desirous that: a satisfactory arrangement should be arrived at. Speaking personally. tho Mayor said that if a subway was to be constructed it should bo so built that it would/take vehicular ns wel! ns pedestrian traffic. Tho district was a growing one with a big future, and such a convenience would lie ' invaluable in years to come. The two engineers- would now consult, and the citv engineer wonld bring, down a report to the council so that its share of Hie cost'could be placed on next year’s estimates.
