VIVIANI’S MISSION TO AMERICA
FRANCE’S FEARS OF SEPARATE PEACE
DANGER OF WITHDRAWAL OF SUPPORT FOR ALLIES
By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright. New York, March 31.
The "New York Times” correspondent at Washington reports that M. Viviaui had a lengthy conference with Mr. C« Hughes (Secretary of State), and was received formally by President Harding, who will entertain him at dinner on April 5It is believed that Franco does not' want the United. States to make a separate peace with Germany, fearing that this will encourage the Germans tq refuse to pay the reparations, and result in the withdrawal of the American troops from the Rhine.
It is believed that France will do anything that will permit the United States to modify the League of Nations’ Coven, ant. in any way the United States desires, but hopes that a new association will be built within the framework of the present League. It is understood that M. Viviani feels that the withdrawal of American support of the Allies would result in the economic collapse of Europe and in further Bolshevism. It is thought that Senator Knox’s peace resolution will be brought up at a special session of the Senate, but it will be attached to a declaration informing Germany that America still supports the Allies in carrying out the Versailles Treaty.—Aus.-N.Z.
