Sir Dighton Probyn, V.C., Comptroller (o Queen Victoria, celebrated his 88th birthday on. January 21. This veteran, is the oldest V.C. alive to-day, and • few months ago, when the King and Queen gave a garden fete in honour of the "bravest of the brave," he was at the head of the procession to Buckingham Palace.
Dr. J. Al. Christie has been appointed president of the AVar Pensions Appeal Board, the constitution of lyhioh was authorised by Parliament last year. Dr. Christie is at present returning to New Zealand from England, vrhere lio has been on a holiday trip, a.nd further appointments will probably lie made when he reaches the Dominion about the middle of this month.
. Air. A. A. Winslow, who has been American Consul-General in Auckland for some years, has left for Sydney, en route to Capo Town, whither he has been transferred.
Air. H. Hancock, of the Poet and Telegraph staff, AVellington, who has just retired on superannuation, has been presented by the operating stiff with a solid leather suit case and two volumes of music. Mr. A. J. Talbot (Superxntendent of Telegraphs) made the presentation on behalf of th* staff, a.nd spoke of the valuable services rendered by Mr. Hancock during his 35 years’ continuous service in the AVellington office.
On Thursday last Messrs. Pollock, .Tenkins, and Dickson, of the National Provident and Friendly Societies Department received presentations from the staff on tho occasion .of severing their connection with the department. Mr. Pollock received a fountain pen, and purse and handbag (for Airs Pollock); Air. Jenkins stainless cutlery, and Air. Dickson, who is being transferred Jo the Lands and Survey leather kit bag. AVhilst regretting the loss of their services, tlhe chief clerk referred to the pleasant relations which had always existed between th-rse offiers . and the other members of the staff, and wished them success in their new spheres.
Air. G? L. Aickin, for several yenra claims clerk with the Union Company, is in AVellington on a business trio from Sydney.
A Press Association telegram from Dunedin states that the death occurred on Thursday of Air. Daniel Haynes, aged 87. He was one of the founders in 18G1 of the firm of Herbert Haynes and Co., drapers
Air. Alexander Jamieson, of Daryel, Ayrshire Scotland, is visiting Christchurch after a tour of Australia and the North Island. Mr. Jamieson holds what is said to be a record for the British Isles. Ho has been Chief Magistrate ot Darvel for twenty-seven years, holding office under Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and King George V, and now, in his absence, he has been elected for another three years. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire for special services during the war, and has assisted in the administration of Public AVorks, Education, and County Council matters in Ayrshire for many years, as well as acting as chairman for the branch of the Unionist Association. Air. G. H. Bullard, who was Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Taranaki district, has arrived in Christchurch to take up his new position in charge of the Canterbury land district. Mr. P. A. Young, postmaster at Geraldine, has been appointed to be postmaster at Wai mate.
A Press Association telesram from Dunedin reports that! Air. John Lindsav, ex-Mayor of Green Island, died suddenly.
Mr. Robert Lawrence Halpin, whose death occurred at Washington, U.S A., recently, was- very well known in AV el lington. lie was a brother of Mr. 1 P.'Halpin and of Mr. Ben Halpin of Wairoa, and was born in Auckland 49 years ago. He was a printer and compositor, and 20 years ago. was employed on the "New Zealand Times. He Vas a partner in a. printing establishment in Auckland before he left for Hawaii in 1916. Subsequently ho went to Seattle, and then on to AVashington. He sutvived by a widow and a family of foul, the eldest being seventeen years of age. Mr. A. Evrard Macindoe, inspector of machinery, Christchurch, has been transferred to ’Wellington. Mr. Charles Mundy has- resigned his position as manager of the Mount Cook Hermitage.
Mr Leslie Gordon Osborne, of the Governmsnt Insurance Department, Wellington, has been appointed district man. ager at Grevmouth.
Mr Alexander Mackintosh, of the Lands and Survey Department, has retired on superannuation. Mr. Mackintosh has been stationed at Blenheim.

Will, late superintendent of the Mongonin Hospitl, JVoith Auckland, and of Dunedin, has returned to England from service in France and is taking a commission in the hcyai Army Medical Corps, on receiving an appointment as specialist m mental d ' sea '' pp - He expects to be stationed in London for about six months, and hopes at the end of that time to be able to visit New Zealand on leave.
The vacancy on the Auckland Grammar School Board of Governors caused by the death of the' Hon. J. A. Tole. has I wen filled bv the election of the Hon. <■-. J. Parr Minister of Education. As .Mr. Parr : s nomination was the only one received, he will be duly declared elected as representative of the members of th House of Representatives and the lative Council resident-m the Auckland district. Mr. Evan Macpherson Macdonald, who recently returned to Chnstchurdh from Tendon lias had the decoration of Chevade Leopold II conferred noon him by the King of the Belgians.
