A meeting of the Karori Progress League was held on Monday night. Mr. Porter wns in the chair, and about 30 members attended. Twelve new .members were elected. , , The resignations of Messrs. Gaugliley (president), M'Kenrie (vice-president, and Skegg (secretary) were accepted with regret, and they were thanked for services rendered. , , , . , . Mr. John Burns was elected president, Mr. Laurenson vice-president, and Mr. Jeffrey secretary. Mr Skegg reported that he had called the meeting for the purpose of considering the position with regard to the coming municipal elections. As a delegate to the Wellington Municipal Electors Association, ho explained the efforts to decide upon, a single candidate to stand in the general interest of the community ns against a candidate who aspired not only to represent only one section of the community, but represented actual hostility to all other sections. After some discussion it was resolved that Mi. Skegg’s action be endorsed. It was suggested that Mr. John Burns, who at present holds a seat on the City Council, by virtue of the re. cent amalgamation with the oitr, should bo supported as A candidate for the new council. It was pointed out that Mr. Burns had already rendered good service on the council, and that it was desirable that at least two or three members of the new council should be elected from the outlying districts so that the general interests of such districts should not )>■- altogether overlooked. In response to numerous reouests Mr. Burns .agreed to nomination. It was resolved that Mr. Skegg continue to act as delegate to the Municipal Electors’ Association, and that Mr. Jeffrey be appointed as the second delegate. Mr Skegg stated that a strong endeavour was being made to eliminate a number of candidates for the- Mayoralty so that a fair fight against the extreme Labour candidate be assured. He was quite prepared to take the feeling of the meeting; ns to choice, and to push such choice, but. asked that in the event of one candidate being selected, whoever ho was all should sink personal feclingi, and do their utmost to secure his election It was resolved that Messrs. Skegg and Jeffrey be given a free hand. It was agreed that the retiring secretary who is leaving the district, and Mrs.’ Skegg be entertained by the association before their departure. Messrs. Burns, Lankshear, Laurenson, and Andrews were appointed a committee -to iwike the necessary arrangements.
