RELIEF FOR SYRIANS

NOT ENEMY ALIENS. The Prime Minister was asked on Monday by Mr. C. E. Statham (Dunedin Central) whether any steps had yet been taken towards removing the disabilities under which Syrians laboured. He remarked that under the War Regulations they were treated as enemy diens. though their sympathies were entirely British. Mr. "Massey said that he had not been able to do anything since the question was raised during a recent visit, to Otago. They had been given relief to the extent of being issued with licenses to acquire land. That was the position at present, lie would like to do more for them, since they had been so very good during the war, not only in New Zealand, but throughout, the world. The matter would 1* attended to during the next session.
