WAGES IN AUSTRALIA

REDUCTION BELIEVED TO BE IMMINENT TO SYNCHRONISE WITH FALL IN COST OF LIVING By Telegraph—Press Association-Oopyright. Sydney, March 19. The opinion is prevalent in Labour circles that a reduction of wages is iminent throughout the Commonwealth to synchronise with the reduction in the cost of living. Some union officials are not opposed to tho reduction of tho bfisic wage if the fall in the cost of living is in greater ratio. Employers favour a round-table conference to consider wages in relation to unemployment. Aiderman Brooks, ex-preaident of the Employers’ Federation, at a farewell function on the eve of his departure for England, stated that he had no patience with employers who talked wildly of a general reduction in wages. The question must be considered in relation only to those industries unable to carry on by the high wages and short hours. — Press Assn.
