CLAIMS ON RAILWAY DEPARTMENT
GOODS LOST IN TRANSIT.

The Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce discussed the matter of claims against the Railway Department for goods lest in transit. One member instanced a case where he had been trying for twelve months to get a claim for £2l settled. The Department admitted liability, but owing to the regulations was only prepared to pay £lO- Moreover, a trader could not sue for recovery except by an action in the Supreme Court against the King, and then only with the consent of the Attorney-General. The speaker claimed that this was an extraordinirv position, and advocated an amendment of the law giving people rhe right to sue the Department. The chamber decided, to take the matter up and refer the question to the M.P. for tho district.
