Five thousand strikers rushed the Wellington jute mills at Calcutta, with brickbats, demanding a final settlement. The Magistrate and police averted a riot, with difficulty pacifying the infuriated mob by suggesting an early settlement. The mob dispersed, but the situation is not hopeful. The mills are safeguarded.
A message from Paris states that the by-elections in the Seine Department, which is a Socialist stronghold, resulted in the return of two Government candidates, who defeated two Communists by an absolute majority of 6-1,864 votes. The Socialists apparently abstained from, supporting the Communists.
