ROADS AND BRIDGES
NO STOPPAGE OF EXPENDITURE SLACKENING OF GENERAL PUBLIC WORKS A report has been in circulation that the Public Works Department was stopping road and bridge construction. The Minister - of Public Works (Hon. J. G. Coates), answering a question on this subject yesterday, said that as far - as local bodies were concerned there had been no interference with ordinary arrangements. The local bodies were still able to lift and spend money that had been voted on the Estimates.
It was true, added the Minister, that the Department had slackened expenditure as far ns ordinary public works were concerned. This had been done in sympathy with the general financial stringency. But he anticipated that the Department would be in a position to increase its operations later in the year if unemployment arose. Mr. Coates said that fuller information on the subject would be placed before the House of Representatives during the session.
