YACHTING
TURNBULL CUP WON BY RONA.
The race for the Turnbull Cup was sailed on Saturday in perfect yacht-rac-ing weather. A steady southerly breeze prevailed, and good time was made round the eighteon-mile course. Six yachts started: Marangi (scratch), Rona (7nnn.), Wanderer (14min.), Wairere II (12mm.) Atalanta (13min.), Viola (20min.). Rona started with one reef and the other yachts with full sail without topsails. Rona and Marangi crossed the line at tho start with plenty of way on, and both yachts pulled away from the rest of the fleet, Marangi getting a slight advantage crossing Oriental Bay. Wanderer jammed Viola and Atalanta, and caused a foul at Jerningham buoy, and. subsequently retired from the race. The run from Jerningham to the mark boat at KorokorO resulted in Jj. Marangi increasing her lead. Rona folowed Marangi round this mark three minutes behind. Wairere II had overtaken and passed Viola, Atalanta, and XX anderer on the run, and stood third at this stage of the race. On the long beat to the pinnacle buoy, Marangi again increased her lead over Rona by a minute and a half, Viola here had a great chance to make good her position, but she was sailed close hauled with a big balloon jib. The sail was frequently in the water, and no doubt the carrying of this sail on close windward work eventualy lost her the race. On her handicap and upon the rest of her sailing on. the day she should, have won. After rounding the pinnacle buoy Marangi set spinnaker and topsail, and was doing well until she lost the best of the breeze at MahangsA Bay. Rona held a good wind, and Marangi was unable to alter - the position before the finishingline was reached. Wairere II dropped her lead over Viola by standing too far to the westward on the beat south. The finishimr times and corrected results for handicap allowance are as follow:—Marangi, finishing time, shr. 56min. steeccorrected time shr. 56min. 5050 c.; Rona, 6hr.
