AMATEUR ATHLETICS

MEETING ON THE BASIN RESERVE A DAY OUT FOR THE LIMIT MEN Some 6000 persons attended the combined clubs'’ athletio meeting which was held -on the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon, under the auspices of the Amateur' Athletio Association. The weather was everything that could be desired, and the competitors .were fairly numerous, Walden, of Canterbury, Brett, of Auckland, and Candy, of Wairaxapa, were the only outside competitors. On the' whole it was a successful meeting, but some of - the flat events were robbed of a certain amount of interest on account of the •cratch men being handicapped out of ■ their respective races. As a matter of fact in several of the races, in. order to win the scratch men would have had to break Australasian records. In the 120 yards hurdles, foil instance, H. E. Wilson, the champion hurdler, who finished second in, his heat, had to break the world’s reoord in order to win. He finished third, his time over the distance being 14 3-sseo., the Australasian and New Zealand record being 15 3-10 sec. In putting the shot, P. Munro broke the Australasian and New Zealand reoord with a throw of 451”. lin. The gathering was marred by an unfortunate incident In connection with the running of the three miles handicap. Rose, a local runner, finished first, well ahead of the rest of the field, 'but he sportively jumped the tape instead of breaking it, and according to the rules the judges hud no option, but to award the race to the man who finished second.
