FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR J.R. GIBBONS

A REPRESENTATIVE GATHERING

The esteem in which the late Mr. John R. Gibbons, chief reporter of the "Evening Post,” was held both as ‘a pressman and a private citizen, was evidenced by the large attendance of journalists and others at his funeral, -which took place yesterday afternoon at Karori -cemetery. The late .Air. Gibbons, after many years’ service at the “Post,” died in Bowen Street hospital on Friday last, following a short illness. The cortege was very large, and included among the representative gathering of citizens at the graveside were: The Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout). Air. A. Gray, K.C., representing the legal profession, the Afayor of Wellington (Mr. J. P. Luke), the' Hon. AV. C. Carnci-oss, the Hon. Alark Cohen, M.L.C., the Hon. IV. H. Triggs, M.L.C., Air. C. Al. Luke, Mr. A. A. Alarryatt, representing the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, Captain Bollins, representing the Marine Department, Air. Louis Blundell, Air. Walter Blundell, nnd Air. Percy Blundell, the Rev. J. Kennedy Elliott, the Bev. 'J. Pitowski, Mr. Charles Wilson, Parliamentary Librarian, Mr. J. Al. Geddis, and Air. Fred Weston, representing the Press Gallery, Air. W. H. Atnck, Air. F. H. Morgan and Air. T- L. Buick, representing the New Zealand Press Association, Air. R. H. Afelville. representing the "New Zealand Herald,” and representatives of various Government Departments, Captain R. 11. Gibbons, and Messrs. Fred and Frank Gibbons, brothers of the deceased were also present. The gathering of pressmen was one of the largest in the history of Wellington. The pallbearers were representatives of the different departments of t'he “Evening Post,” and the service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev.. W. Fancourt, of St. Thomas’s, Newtown. Alanv beautiful wreaths were sent by pressmen and others from all parts of the Dominion, the late Mr. Gibbons being one of the best known figures in Australasian journalism.
