The Yacca gum industry, on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, is the subject of an article in the United States "Commerce Reports." Ten thousand tons were gathered last year, and shipped to Great Britain and the United States. "Before the war," continues the report, "nearly two-thirds of the Australian output was bought by German firms. Local dealers have never been able to discover what use the Germans put it to, but it is believed, that it' was used in tho manufacture of furniture polish and lacquer for metal ware. It should rot be overlooked, however, that, the product contains a high percentage of picric acid on nitration, and it is not unlikely that it was also used by tho Germans in tho manufacture of explosives—a uee to which it was put by the Allies in 1917 and 1918.” The gum has also been used in the manufacture of dyes.
