CARNIVAL AT TE ARO MISS SHAND MAKES NEW RECORD Favoured by fin© weather conditions, the carnival of th© Wellington Centre of th© New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, held at the Te Aro Baths on Saturday afternoon, proved a very great success. There was all exceptionally large crowd present, every vantage point being occupied. The chief attractions were Miss Gwitha Shand, of Christchurch, who beat the world’s record for 440 yards at Dunedin, and may be regarded as th© world’s champion for the distance, and Miss Kathleen Bristed, also of Christchurch, the lady champion diver of New Zealand. There being no New’ Zealand record for 220 yards. Miss Shand essayed to establish one, which she did, doing the distance in 3min. 7 4-ssec. The world’s record is 2min. 56sec. Miss Bristed was her pacemaker for this event, and the two yopng ladies were also associated in exhibitions of swimming. Miss Bristed gave exhibitions of diving, which were a revelation to the young swimmers present. The events were staged in quick succession and without any hitch, showing that the commitlee had organised the carnival on right lines. The Wellington Professional Brass Band, under the conductorship of Mr.. A. Lawrence, provided an excellent musical programme. The principal officials were: —Beferee, Mr. T. Shields; starter. Mr. It. D: J. Murrell (Lyall Bay S.C.) 1 E. Paterson (Evans Bay S.C.) 2 j. Edwards (Maranui S.C.) 3 The only starters. Time, 60 4-ssec. Paterson, who was the previous champion, did not succeed in retaining the position. It was he who established the New Zealand record of 60sec. 220yds. Ladies’ Championship.—Miss Shand and Miss Bristed were the only starters, and it was in this race that Miss Shand desired to a record. She covered the distance in 3min. 7 4-ssec.
100yds. Breast-stroke Handicap—A. Claridge (4sec.), 1; L. Riddell (7sec.), 2 G. Evatt (Msec.) actually came in first, but he was disqualified. Diving Competition.—Men: E. Paterson, 1 ; W. Hicks, 2. Duthie Cup: Teams' Race, 100yds., for School Teams of Four.—Mount Cook (Cleverley, Ruscoe, Jackson, and O’Donnell), 1; Clyde Quay (Miles, Thomas, Tanner, Fitch), 2. The Mount Cook Boys’ School, the holders of th© cup, thus retained the trophy.

A game of water polo by the more powerful swimmers pleased the crowd im mensely, and brought the afternoon’s programme to a close.
GALA AT TEPID BATHS TO-NIGHT. The public will have another opportunity of seeing the champion swimmers Misses Shand and Bristed at the swimming gala to be held in the Tepid Baths, Tasman Street, to-night. Miss Shand will endeavour to establish n new record for 109yds., and, assisted by Miss Bristed, will give an exhibition of the various styles of swimming now in vogqeIn addition to the appearance of the lady champions, an added attraction will be the sailors of the H.M.S. Chatham, who will take part in the programme. Lieutenant O’Donnell, the Chatham sports master, will bo in charge of a flying squadron, who will try conclusions with an institute team. A. full dress race, and an obstacle race by the sailors should prove interesting and amusing.
