THE NEW ZEALAND BISLEY

D.R.A. MEETING AT TRENTHAM RFLMN. PIPER SHOWS OUT IN WESTLAND MATCH SERVICE TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP Competitors at ths D.R.A. meeting on Saturday found Trentham in a very different mood from the one it had been in on the two previous days. Early in the morning, a thick fog was over the, camp, and when the marksmen reached the ranges 'between 7.30 and 8 a.m. they found their view of the targets obscured by a veil of mist. This delayed the commencement of firing by half-an-hour. Even at the end of that time wisps of fog still hung about, and the first competitors to shoot worked under difficulties. As the sun rose higher, the fog disappeared, and the day grew bright, except during brief spells, when the elouds shut out the sunlight. A rather tricky wind came from th.© north-east, •nd the atmosphere was "close" and somewhat trying. The principal event of the day was the firing of the Westland match, second of the Belt series this year. Rflran. Piper's performance in this match was the talk of the range. Piper is a member of the Christchurch Club, and is entered as a tyro, since he has never previously won £1 in a D.R.A. meeting. His score was 100 points out. of a possible 105. At 300yds. he made 31; at 50Oyds., 34; and at '6ooyds., 35. At 300yds. his shots ran thus: 5, 4. 5,4, 5,3, 5. the dropping of onb point nt • 00yds. was due to the last shot at that range, which was a 4. Piper made a total of 89 in the opening match, and one of 90 in the Auckland match. At Greytown recently he won the Midfield aggregate and the championship. So far as the Belt championship aggregate is concerned, at the end of the second match of the series, Piper leads with 190 points, and H. V. Croxton (Karori) is next with 188. Tn the match for the Senior Cadets, the entry was disappointing, only forty cadets coming forward, sixteen were from Wellington and were not entered for other events at the meeting. Colonel Collins, who addressed the boys, eaid that lie had expected ft very much larger entry. The match had been fixed for Saturday in order, to enable cadets to come to Trentham in some strength. It was designed to give young, men an interest in shooting, which was not to be considered merely rs a sport. The Senior Cadets formed the most important part of the defence scheme, ns they underwent, training at the most receptive age. They would provide a capable force in the future, if only they were given sufficient training in shooting and physical drill. Because of the smallness of the entry in the above-mentioned match, the prize mon,ey was reduced from £2O to .Cl2. Cadets who did not receive x their prizes on Saturday may obtain them on application to Major Dunne (secretary of the association), care G.P.0., Wellington. . Teams Competitions. An interesting series of teams competitions occupied the greater part of SaUurday afternoon. The Sir Logan Campbell Shield for champion eormce team was awarded to the Post mid Telegraph Wellington A team, the runner-up being the Te Kuiti Rifle Club team. In the casually competition, first of the eerie?, the targets, which were iron fallingplates, represented team members. Tho teams fired in pairs, nnd When a- targes representing'a particular competitor was hit it fell, and the competitor was hors de combat. The way in which eome of the tuims wiped out their opponents was startling. Tn the "machine-gun rescue which followed, a representation of machinegun flanked by two figure targets moved nt a walking pace across the front. -Ine rule was ifhat the gun might continue to move only so long ns it had a, figure target unhit, on either side of it. When a figure was hit. the gun stopped, resuming its journey when the casualty 'had been replaced. Eight figures made tip the rud crew, and the team disposIng of the eight in the shortest time won the match. Of course, in the event of bad shooting, the gun would eventually reach cover with some- of ihe crew etiil "alive.” For the superiority of fire competition one figure target to each man was provided. The targets were lowered when 'hit, and at intervals «f ten seconds from the commencement two additional targets were put up. Pointe wore allowed according to tne number of hits and the number of rounds not fired. Each man had eight rounds to begin with. General Notes. ■Replying to nn invitation to visit the meeting, the Primo Minister (the Right Hon W. F. Massey) wrote to the chief executive officers as follows: "As you may well understand, J. km extremely busy just now preparing for the coming session, but 1 should very much like to pay you n visit during the meeting, and if it is at nil possible to do so before tho close of the competitions, I shall tot you know. In nil probability no compet'tor proposes to arrive behind schedule time at the squadding posts to-day. A little unpunctuality on the part of halt a dozen competitors on Friday afternoon cost them 2s. 6d. a 'head, this being the amount of the fine inflicted A few marksmen lined up a minute late on . Saturday, but were let off with h warnare seven aggregate prizes to bn awarded cadets at the conclusion ot the meeting. As has been previously stated, 24 cadets are on the regular roll of competitors. .... ... An unofficial reckoning indicates that upon the conclusion of Matthes 1 to 5 of the service series, the following competitors are in the lead, with the scores i Mated: M'Leay (Te Kuiti), 197; King (Opaki). 195; Hester (Wellington) 192; H L Frank (Timaru), J. C. Nicholls (Bruce), and A. J. Henderson (Sounds), tec A number of competitors have no? vet fired the Quick March Match, which is the last preceding the Service Championship Match. Whether they will be. given a further opportunity depends on the decision of rhe executive council today. The Quick March event should really have been finished by all on ..atiirday.
