There was good American and Continental competition. Crossbreds were slightly better at late rates. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. (Rec. March 6, 11.5 p.m.) London, March 5.... At the wool sales there- was an average eelection. The British-Australian Wool Realisation Association’s reserves were high, and less than a third of the offering was sold at late rates. The New Zealand St. Helens clip realised 34Jd. per lb. The total offerings at the concluded series were 72,502 'bales free and 57,807 bales of British-Australian Realisation Association wool. For if considerable time endeavours have been made to open up the limestone reserve in the Manawatu Gorge, which has been placed at the disposal of farmers by the Government, and; the Manawatu sub-provisional executive of the Fanners’ Union has had the matter in hpnd for the past six months. A contei’ence of delegates from all branches of the union in tile Wellington province oh the western side of the range, together with delegates from Woodville. Bahiatun. and Dannevirke. was called tor to-day at Palmerston North when Seventeen attended. The best means of formjng a company were discussed, and eventually a committee was set up to formulate proposals to lay before a conference to be held in Palmerston North nt the time of the Winter Show. COMMERCIAL ITEMS INVESTMENT SHARES. A sale of 4J per cent. Inscribed Stock, due 1933. at £B4. was made on 'Change on Saturday. The quotations were as follow:—
CUSTOMS REVENUE. Customß revenue collected at the nort of Wellington on Saturday totalled £1920 12s. LONDON TALLOW MARKET. Under date March 3. Messrs. Weddel and Co. London, advise Messrs. A. H. Turnbull and Co. that the tallow market is easier, there being a small demand, and pricns generally ranging from Is. to Zs. lower. Under date of March 2. the London house of Messrs. Booth and 00.. Christchurch, cabled that at the tallow sales, held on that day. 2754 casks were offered.. but only 300 casks were sold. The market declined £1 10s- per ton all round, as compared with the previous eale. The same firm’s New York house reports a weak market, with city special quoted at 51 cents per pound. The Stansell Shield matches, an annual fixture for a shield presented by Mrs. J. R. Stansell, of Lyall Bay for competition between the Lyall Bay, Seatoun and Hataitai Clubs, took place on Saturday. The annual match for the Friendly Bowl between the Christchurch and Wel-Un-rion Clubs was played on Saturday on the Wellington. Club’s green, and it wns most enjoyable, as the weather and rinks were perfect. The visitors were met on the arrival of the s.s. Maori by Messrs. Wylie-, Kinvig, and Tasker, and the formal welcome by the president (Mr. A. Carr) was given in the club pavilion at M. 30. A mixed friendly game was played up to 12.30 o clock, when luncheon was partaken of by the visitors and members. After the game was finished, the Friendly Bowl w a * handed over to Mr. Hobbs, president of the Christchurch Club, to hold it until next year, when the members of the local club go to return the visit.
