WELLINGTON LADIES BEAT CANTERBURY BY 9 RUBBERS TO 3 A ladies’ tennis match between representatives of Canterbury and Wellington was played at Christchurch on Saturday, and resulted in a win for -Wellington by 9 rubbers' to 3. The grass courts were in first-class order. The results are as follow: — Doubles —Misses Foster and Howe (Wellington) beat Mrs. Lord and Miss Goodman, 6—4, 6—4; Miss Travers and Mrs. Parkinson (Wellington) beat Misses Bain and Smith, 6—5, 6—2; Miss Curtis and Mrs. Melody (Wellington) beat Mesdames Richter and Lord, G —o, G—o; Miss Curtis and Mrs. Melody (Wellington) beat Mrs. Lord and Miss Goodman, 6 —l, 6 —5; Miss Travers and Mrs. Parkinson (Wellington) beat Mesdames Richter and Laurenson, 6—5, 5—6, 6—5; Misses Foster and Howe (Wellington) beat Misses Bain and Smith, 6-3, 6-4. Singles—Miss Curtis (Wellington) beat Mrs. Lord, 6—l, 6—2; Mrs. Melody (Wellington) lost to Mrs. Richter, 2—6, 3—6; Miss Travers (Wellington) beat Miss Goodman, 6—3, G—o; Mrs. Parkinson (Wellington) lost to Airs. Laurenson, 2 —6, 2 —6; Miss Foster (Wellington) lost to Miss Bain, 5—6, 2 —6; Miss Howe (Wellington) beat Miss Smith. 6—o, 6—3. The members of the Wellington team were treated with the greatest hospitality in Christchurch. Air a complimentary dinner they were warmly welcomed by Mr. Seay, president of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. Mrs. Melody returned thanks on behalf of the visitors. SALAMANCA CLUB OPENS COURTS. The official opening of \the Salamanca municipal lawn tennis courts was held on Saturday. These new courts are both asphalt, and are situated at the end of Salamanca Road, just above Aurora Terrace. The Rev. R. Orr (president of the club), in declaring the courts open, told how they had come into being. He expressed the club’s gratitude to Mr. J. P. Luke and the other gentlemen who had helped them. The club had 65 members, alid there were a number on the waiting list. He moved a vote of thanks to the guarantors, and wished the club every success. Mr. B. Thomson, the club’s secretary, spoke about the membership, and mentioned that during the winter months, from May 1 until the end of September, there would be a special winter membership. A number of games were played during the afternoon.
