DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS WELLINGTON WINS SHIELD BY A NARROW MARGIN By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, March 5. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association's annual championship nieeting was held at the Domain this after- ■, 'noon. The weather was fine and the track fast. There was an attendance of about 5000, and a very fine afternoon’s sport was witnessed. Wellington won the Championship Shield by the narrow margin of • one point from Auckland. The scores were: —Wellington, 53 points; Auckland, 52; Canterbury, 7. The meeting was a great success in . every respect. Although no new records " were established, George Davidson, the Auckland sprinter, equalled the New Zen- ’ land record in the 220yds. championship. When the couree was re-measured, it was found to be 4ft. over the standard, which was unfortunate for Davidson. There were several features of the afternoon. One of them was the misfori tune of the Canterbury crack middlodistance runner, Taylor, was was spiked on ! his first appearance in the half-mile trace, and though he won the race in good ' time, he was unable to run again, and I ' had to have hospital attention. This J undoubtedly lost the Canterbury team a number of points. The other feature was the unexpected appearance of two new Auckland champions in the field events, which were looked upon as a gift to the Wellington men. G. A. Plitmmer did a great performance in covering 45ft. Bin. in the hop, step, and jump, and W. J. Perry got within 6in. of the New Zealand record in the broad jump. Another surprise was the performance ■of R. M. Webber in winning the mile and three-mile races. Dave Wilson, a veteran of 45 years, came out and won the mile and three-mile walks. It yi twenty-four years since he first became the New Zealand amateur champion walker. His action was the subject of comment from the crowd, but it passed muster with the judge, who followed him closely all through. Two interesting events which were not on the championship programme were discus throw by P. Munro (Wellington) and J. M'Holm (Wellington), the only competitors, the distance being 114 ft. Sin. In the javelin throw, E.,G. Sutherland (Wellington) was first, and*P. Munro (Wellington) second, the distance being 134 ft. These were .the only competitors. The results are .as follow:— 100 YARDS HANDICAP. First heat: L. C. Williams (3yds.), 1; W. 1,. Elliott (4Jyde.), 2. Time, 10 2-ssec. Second heat: L. J. Grice (6yds.), 1; L. 0. Wrathall (51yds), 2. Time, 10 3-ssec. Third heat: T. L. Williams (51yds.), 1; F. G. Austin (4yds.), 2. Time, 10 3-ssec. Final: L. C.‘Williams, 1; Elliott, 2; T. L. Williams, 3. Won by six inches in lOsec. dead. F. Thorpe, J. W. Olphert, L. R. Langa. Taylor made a jump for the. lead on the outside, and in the course of running inside an opponent, had his right foot spiked. Despite the injury, he held to the lead, with Olphert second, and Grierson third. After a quarter had gone, Taylor was running beautifully, 'with a long, sweeping stride. He lengthened his stride, and Olphert and Grie - son dropped away, while Nesdale ran in,to second place. As they came into the straight, the Canterbury man, finishing strongly, drew away from Nesdale, and won by a dozen yards. Wren, of Auckland, ran into third place. Time, 2min. 1 l-ssec. MILE WALK CHAMPIONSHIP. (Last year’s champion, A. B. Sievwright.) ' D. Wilson (Auckland) 1 ■T. M’Kenzie (Wellington) 2 F. Hickling (Wellington) 3 D. Carline (Auckland) was the only other starter. J. M'Kenzie, a youth <f 17, took the lead, but at the half-mile D. Wilson, a veteran of over 40 years, began to tread on the leader’s heels, and in the ■ concluding stages the veteran took the lead. M'Kenzie stuck gamely to his task, and a good finish saw Wilson win by a yard, with Hickling a good third. Time, 7min. l-ssec.
