DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION
MR. J. CAUGHLEY APPOINTED.
The Public Service Commissioner yesterday announced the appointment of Mr. J. Caughley, M.A., to the position of Director of Education, in succession to Dr. Anderson, who is about to retire on superannuation. Mr. Ggughley is et present Assistant-Director of Education, to which position he was appointed on January 24, 1916. Prior to his appointment to this position he had 28 years’ experience as a teacher - in three education districts, covering every class of school in New Zealand. Mr. Caughley was born at Auckland on February 9, 1871. He went through his earlier training in the Hawke’s Bay educational district. At the opening of the Wellington Training College for Teachers, in 1906, he was appointed as-Bistant-in-charge of the secondary depanlment. During his university studies he was on the roll of the university colleges of Canterbury, Victoria, and Auckland. He was awarded the M.A. degree in 1905. and also gained the Bowen Essay Prize of the New Zealand UniversAs assistant-director Mr. Caughley has had a good opportunity of obtaining a wide knowledge of the professional and administrative side of the work of the Department in all its branches. H is well read in educational literature, and his views in this connection are regarded ns orthodox and progressive, fie has been intimately connected vith th teachers’ grading scheme since ids inception, and through freq’ient .to different parts of New Zealand has come in personal contact with the teachers and educational officials of the Dominion.
