UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT
INCREASE AGREED TO,
‘(Rec. February 25, 5.5 p.m.) London, February 24
In the House of Commons, in committee on the Unemployment Bill, Air. J. K. Clynes moved an increase in the benefit to 4fls. for the head of a family and 255. for others. This was not a fanciful, extravagant figure, lie said, -16 s. was only equal to 15s. bfcforts the war. It was the business of the Government to find the money. Dr. Macnamara. said the scheme would hopelessly bankrupt the insurance fund. Sir Donald Maclean said he could not vote for the increase to 405., as it would wipe out the whole scheme, but favoured 20s. Mr. G. N. Barnes, Sir Edward Carson, and others urged the Government to increase the benefit to 20s. Dr. Mac.namara consented, and Mr. Clynes withdrew his a-mnendment. The House raised the women’s benefit from 15s. to 165., and the Unemployment Bill, as amended, was reported to the House—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
