THE COMING CARNIVAL

Satisfactory progress reports were received at the last meeting of the executive of the "Citizen-Soldiers’ Carnival.’’ Mr. T. Ward, vice-chairman, presided. A letter was received from the private secretary to His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, stating that notwithstanding altered arrangements, His Excellency regretted that, he would be in Christchurch on March 5. and would therefore be unable to officially open the carnival on that date. It, was decided to request His Excellency, as patron, to attend the carnival on the first available opportunity during the period March 5-12, and to speak on that occasion. The War Museum Committee recommended that the vestibule on the first floor of the Town Hall be used for the display of the War Museum trophies to be lent by the Defence Department, instead of the Concert Chamber, as previously intended. The committee considered that a better display could be made in the vestibule, and, moreover, ths would leave the Concert Chamber free' for the holding of entertainments. The report was adopted. The organiser (Mr. K. Hill) reported that in addition to the services of the Caledonian. sth Regiment. .Artillery, and Central Mission Hands, which were being given free of charge, the Tramways Band had also offered its services on the same generous terms. lie stated that ro far as entertairme-'t.s >n both the Concert Chamber and the Town Hall were concerned. the Entertainments. Committee had more talent available than it could put on the seven nights. It is proposed to nut on two nrogrammes in the Concert Chamber each night, of half or threeouarters of nn hour each. Each programme would be of a. high-class end guaranteed to amuse. while specially attractive turns would be kept going, constantly in. the big hail. Generous offers were also being received of special entertainments. opart from Carnival Week, in aid of the Community Club fund.
