T . • > A young man named James David Stancomb, alias Hamilton, was charged with forging a cheque drawn on the Ba'iK of New Zealand, Wellington, for £lO, pay able to L. D. M’Arthur, and purport! t. to be signed by A. B. Hamilton, \ with causing George C. Niven to act upon the same as if it were genuine. He was also charged with forging a cheque toi £lO, drawn on the Bank of New > Zea land; Christchurch, payable to W.- D. Hill, and purporting to bo signed by A. J. Hamilton, and with causing Nellie Krahagen to act upon the same as if H were genuine. The accused pleaded gxtilty to both charges. The facts were that the accused went into Hannah and Lo. s shon, Lambton Quay, purchased a pair or lady's shoes, and tendered a chequ . which he stated had been £y Mr. Hamilton, M.P. for Awarua, and that, he was tffe M'Arthur to whom trie cheque value of the boots was deducted from the cheque and the hal ance handed to him in cash- He repeatea the same trick at Carterton where he nurchased a pair of tan boots foi niiu self at £2 155., and obtained the balance of a cheque for £lO in cash, lhe accused was committed to the Supreme Court for Se john Ce Cecil Kiernan, who had failed to provide adequate maintenance for his ill. p-itimate child, was ordered to pay lus. pel week, together with £lO past maintenalFoer drunkenness, Alexander M'Bride was fined 205., with the optionof threedays imprisonment.
