In connection with the Duke of Connaught’s visit a great meeting of extremists was held at Gaziabad, nine miles from the city. Violent speeches were made, in which the Duko’s utterances were characterised as "lies uttered deliberately as the ‘Government mouthpiece tending to further shackle India instead of liberating her.” They also characterised the King’s message to the legislative bodies referring tcwSwaraj as "bluff witli the object of 'bolstering up the proposed reforms.” The extremist Press is growing more violent in its denouncement of the Government. A sensation has been caused at Calcutta, by the disappearance of two cases of rifles and revolvers after landing. Six thousand railwaymen suddenly struck at Bombay, causing some disorder. An increase of pay was granted them, retrospective from April, 1919. The postal strike, which had lasted for five months, ended by the surrender of the strikers. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [When inaugurating the Council of State and Legislative Assembly at Delhi last week, the Duke of Connaught read a message from the King. His Majesty congratulated the country on the success of years of labour. "For years,” he said, "may be for generations, patriotic and loyal Indians have dreamed of a Swaraj for their Motherland. NON-COOPERATION MOVEMENT BIG DEMONSTRATION IN DELHI. (Rec. February 14, 0.45 a.m.) Delhi, February 12. After addressing a gathering of 60.000 extremists at Lucknow, Ghandi arrived at Delhi and was welcomed with great enthusiasm by 20,000 natives, who arranged for a great non-co-operation demonstration procession, while the Duke of Connaught was performing the ceremony of laying the foundation stone ot the new Legislative Chamber.—Aus.-N .Z.
