RETALIATORY DUTIES

TO PROTECT OUR WOOL AGAINST U.S. TARIFFS.

In view of the reported, intention of the United States to impose a heavy duty on raw wool, the. conference of the Industrial Corporation of New Zealand, iu Auckland, considered a remit from Dunedin advocating a iecommendation to Parliament! taking power to impose by proclamation a retaliatory tariff of a similar character.

Mr. W. It. Haywood, of Dunedin, pointed out how Canada, by the throat of retaliation, had ‘led the United States to reconsider her intention of penalising that country by imposing a heavy duty on wheat.

Mr. C. J. Ward, Wellington, said that New Zealand’s present tariff discriminated against the United States to the extent of 50 per cent., and they in New Zealand might make themselves ridiculous by dealing in such a manner with a country of the importance of the United States. He thought that before the conference: should endorse the remit, it should have much more information than had. been given. It having been discovered that tho remit was not formally on the agenda pupor, it was withdrawn on the. understanding that the- question would come before the Tariff -Commission later on.
