MOUNT COOK SCHOOL
*»• * 4. SELECTION OF A SITE. The Minister of Education' (Hon. C. J. Parr) informed a Dominion reporter yesterday that Cabinet had reached a decision regarding the site of the new Mount Cook School. Three schemes had been placed before Ministers, and a selection had been made. He could not give details at that time, since negotiations, for the purchase of some additional land required by tho Education Board were in progress. The board could acquire the land under the Public Works Act, in the event of the negotiations .failing. Mr. Parr added that the new site would bo nearly three acres and a half in extent. and. would be almost level. The Defence Department had. assisted by exchanging some land for other - land elsewhere. Tht> Education Board’s proposal involved the ultimate demolition of some twenty cottages, and tho Government naturally had been unwilling to approve of this hastily, in view of* the great shortage of houses. The Minister hoped' that a substantial part of the area would be retained as playground for the children attending the school. '*
