DRIVING A TRAM TOO FAST
EX-MOTORMAN CHARGED FINE OF £5 INFLICTED An unusual case was brought by the police in tho Alagistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon, before Air. F. K. Hunt, S.M. An ex-motorman named Janies W. Taylor was charged that on October 29 he negligently drove a -tramcar in Rintoul Street. Senior-Sergeant APNamara appeared for the police. The defendant did not appear. Senior-Sergeant Al'Namara said that on the morning of October 29, the defendant was driving a tramcar from Island Bay into the city, and coming down Rintoul Street,which had a grade of 1 in 18, and with a strong wind against him, he was travelling at about 30 miles per hour. There was a horse and cart in. the street driven by P. C. Roberts, who was also coming down the street. Owing to the high wind, Roberta did ..not hear the tram nor the gong, with the result that thg cart was crashed into, carried about 48ft., and shot through a tence. Corroborative evidence ivas given by several eye-witnesses, including a passenger on the tramcar, ivho said he v standing behind the motorman. Inspector Liardet said that the brakes were in perfect order on the date in question, and that the defendant was not now in the employ’ of the tramway department. r Taylor was convicted and fined £o, and ordered to pay costs and expenses totalling £3 9s.
