SWIMMING
THE GISBORNE TROUBLE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, January 18. With reference to a Hastings telegram, stating that Miss Bleibtrey could not have landed till Sunday, the facts are that the Mararoa’s passengers experienced no difficulty in landing on Saturday evening, the sen being calm. Arrangements had been made to bring the swimmer ashore in a special launch immediately on her arrival. The local manager of the Union Company protests strongly against misleading statements from Hastings in connection with Miss Bleibtrey’s visit. Hf» i states that the Macaron was tendered a* usual on arrival, in fact, by 9.45 p.m. on . Saturday the vessel had taken on board in the roadstead a largo number of out going passengers, and was well on the way to Auckland. He had made special arrangements to bring Miss Bleibtrey s party ashore by special launch as soon as the vestal arrived in the bay. As far as the steamer arrangements were concerned, there was no reason why Miss Bleibtrev should not have landed in ample time for the swimming, carnival.
