A BUSY YEAR
THE PORT OF WELLINGTON SHIPPING FOR THE YEAR Lost year was a busy one nt the port oi Wellington. According to a return supplied to a Dominion reporter by the Harbour Board yesterday, 2711 vessels of a net tonnage, of 2,796,189 tons, entered the port during the year. Compared with the returns for 1919, this shows a de crease of 58 vessels entering the port, but the ships last year were of a larger eize and the net tonnage for the yea< shows an increase of 300,916, tons. Wellington is the only port whiclf includes only genuine mercantile trading vessels in its returns. The other ports include warships, transports, fishing and inter-harbour, vessels, and other nontrading craft in their monthly and yearly returns. Other ports also take the gross tonnage, but the Wellington Harbour Board only keeps the net tonnages therefore, it is hardly possible to compare the returns for Wellington with those of other ports except in respect t“ net tonnages, and even then the comparison would not be totally fair to Wellington, since many vessels are excluded from the Wellington returns, but similar craft help to swell the totals for the other ports. . Detailed returns for each month of last year,, and for 1919 of vessels entering Wellington are as follow:— 1920.
