WAR RELIEF
CLAIMS OF TUBERCULAR MEN
NO NECESSITY FOR SPECIAL GRANT
The executive committee of the Mar Relief Association of Wellington met yesterday afternoon. The chairman (Mr. L. O. H. Tripp) presided. 4 letter was read from the Service Patients’ Welfare League, I’ukeora Sanatorium, requesting the allocation of a portion of the association s ronds foi the exclusive benefit o tubercular men. The committee noted that the letter was evidently resultant upon Mi. Clutl a Mackenzie’s recent suggestion to the Advisory Board that similar acton should be taken in respect to totallj b U d w a rE;d to reply that there was no necessity for a special grant, ns tubercular men came under the scheme already provided for by the association. The finance committee reported that six claims, which had been referred to it bv the applications committee, were finalised. Two loans were authonsed for businesses, one of which vas to a partially disabled soldier, and the other to a soldier’s mother, who was in difficulties owing to the war disabilities of her son. The remaining lour eases were for the purchase of residential properties, and as three ot the applicants were suffering as the result of uar d sabiilities, the committee granted the sums asked for, whilst in the remaining c'i<e the committee was satisfied that there were exceptional circumstances and decided to grant the amount icqUThel applications committee reported that it met on two occasions only since the last meeting of the executive coi. - mittee on December 13, 19 - 0 ’ ”‘ ld dealt with H 6 applications the total number of claims received during the period December 14, 1920, to January 16, lirtl was 308, comprising 48 new applications and 68 renewals and reconsiderations. There were 192 claims under action, a considerable number of winch were the responsibility of other societies, and the majority of these outstand in- applications would bo dealt with at the next meeting of the committee. Manv claims had been lodged since the office reopened on January 11, and these would be presented for decision in due course. The staff were engaged in preparing a further list of iiermanently and partially disabled soldiers, which would be forwarded to the other patriotic and wat” relief associations when completed. Both reports were adopted.
