SOLDIERS’ LOANS
THE INCREASE OF REPAYMENTS. Three months hence, if the expectations of the Reparation Department are realised, the income from the repayment of loans by soldiers will equal the monthly expenditure on soldiers. The Department will then be self-supporting in the sense that no fresh loan money will be required for loans to soldiers. This calculation does not cover the purchase of land for settlement. "The expenditure on repatriation,’ said the Hon. D. H. Guthrie yesterday, "reached its maximum in December, 1919. in which month .£120,000 was advanced to returned soldiers. Since then the expenditure has decreased month by month, while the income from repayments has increased steadily.” The Minister quoted the figures for ' the last six months as follow: — Monthly Monthly expenditure collection on soldiers. from soldiers.
November 64,733 35,875 Mr. Guthrie explained that 8o per cent, of the expenditure was by way ot loan. The total collection to the end of November, he said, was £376.542.
