AMERICA V. AUSTRALIA VISITORS AGAIN BEATEN IN DOUBLES By Telegraph—Press Association-Cbpyright. (Ree. January 14, 10.45 p.m.) Melbourne, January 14. For the second day of the match between America and Australia, the weather was perfect, and the court in good order. The attendance was large. Patterson and Hawkes beat "Washburn and Tilden, 6 —3, 7—5. Hawke’s playing was fine, his placing lieing very accurate. Tilden’s service direction was very telling. Patterson was. much below form, but made a great rally in the sixth game. In the first set Tilden’s baso line drives were very severe, and his back-hand drives were a special feature of the game. Tilden beat O’Hara Wood, B—6, 6—2. Tilden started serving poorly. Wo’od’s half-court »me strokes were splendid. Tilden made beautiful cross-ccurt strokes, and his volley and service were extra severe. Wood was outclassed in the second set, only winning the fourth and fifth games. Johnston beat Brookes, 3—6, 6—l, 6—4. The strategy of Brookes gained him some advantage in the first set, but Johnston’s long driving across court to the side lines kepr: Brookes too busy to hold his strength.
