BOWLING
DOMINION TOURNAMENT
SECTION PLAY CONCLUDES
DRAW FOR POST-SECTION PLAY
The fourth day of the Dominion Bowling Association’s tournament yesterday fwv the play grow keener, if anything, than on any of the previous days. It was noticeable, too, that players spent a good deal of their time over the lists of wins and losses, speculating as to who would be interested in the post-section. The sun did not shine with the same strength as on the three previous days, but this was not altogether a disadvantage, as some of the players—am Ing them some from Auckland —were complaining mildly of the heat, and the cooler weather had a freshening effect. The greens played very keenly, and nowhere did the light breeze interfere with the play. As mentioned, the eighth round, played yesterday afternoon, saw the end of .he Action play. The games to-diiy will be confined to inter-section piny between those who won sections outright, and those who won as many games as .he winner of any section (not lower than six The following are the results of yesterday’s play: — SEVENTH ROUND. WINS AND LOSSES.
POST-SECTION PLAY. In all but one section (G) the sections were headed by rinks which had six cr more wins. In Section G, no fewer than five rinks came out with five wins and three losses. As none of these qualified these four rinks will play off against one another this morning, as the rule provides that a rink must have six wins nt least to qualify for inter-section play. This will mean that two rinks from Section G, a draw was held, and it was section play. Having explained the foregoing, the players still , left in are those with six wins or over (see "Wins and Losses” above). To settle who shall play off in Section G, a draw was held, and it was arranged that Haldane (Nelson) shall play Ardell (Hataitai) and Land (Hastings) shall play Gray (Kelbiiiii). These games will be played on the Wellington Club’s green (lower) at 9 o’clock this morning.

NOTES His Excellency the Governor-General (Viscount Jellicoe) is to visit the Wellington Bowling Club’s green on Tuesday afternoon next, when the final gamein the rink contest will be played. His Excellency will be met at the Peace Gates by the executive of" the Dominion Association, whilst the bowlers will line the entrance path. A mistake was made by the umpire on the Island Bay green (Section F) when detailing the results over the telephone. The correct results in this section were as follow: —Calder beat M'Kittrick, HO—--22; Hill beat M'Lennan, 28—8; Harkness beat Mason, 22 —21; M'Lc-od beat Redpath, 25—24; lioutley beat Martin, 26—24.
All bowlers are reminded of the D.B.A.’s annual smoke concert, which is to take place to-morrow evening. Matters of interest concerning the administration of the game and control of tournaments will be introduced by various speakers, for the purpose of gaining the views of players generally as a guidance to any future action that may, be contemplated in the interests of the game. “1 cannot imagine a green being any better than this,” a member of one of the visiting teams was overheard to remark at the Petone green yesterday cfternoon.
There were some ups and downs in section C, playing at Lower Hutt. Chegwin, who had given Spiller a hard fighil the previous day, went down to Lock by one point. Lock, in turn, suffered defeat at ihe hands of Johnston, Lower Hutt. The Hutt skip played beautiful bowls, and was deadly on. the draw. Dimock, of Island Bay, won his two games, his team improving with every game. Had they met the "hot stuff” at the end, instead of the beginning, they would probably have been further up. Shepherd managed to annex the wooden spoon, losing eight matches. Langdon’s team had a day off, and Duncan’s (earn deserved a better fate, especially after their great uphill fight and victory over Lock at Seatoun. Sloane’s team since the first games has been minus Sloane, and Thompson has played uphill games as skip. Lock’s team did not seem to play as well yesterday as they did on the home green.
M'Farlane’s t'eam of young players did excellent work, and of Spiller’s team, with eight victories, too much cannot lie said. They are as fine socially as they are players, and set a standard, hard to beat. F. Spiller is an old AVellingtonian. and in his first game in the tourney had as an opponent! an old schoolmate he had not seen for twenty-seven years.
"'Section C has been a very happy one,” said a player in this section. “All have played the game, and the umpire was not needed except to measure.” On the conclusion of yesterday’s play, Spiller and Chegwin were both congratulated on being "in,” and a wish was expressed by vhe many they have beaten that they would both be in the final.” RESTRICTED”TOURNAMENTS RINKS ONLY. There is a distinct feeling that the time has arrived when the big Dominion Bowling Association’s tournament will have to be restricted to rinks only, as the time occupied in getting off rinks, pairs, and singles contests covers too long a period. This was uncalled, for in the past, as the tournaments were of lesser dimensions, but with the record established here this year for rink entries it seems that the annual tournament will become unwieldy if all three contests are retained, and the games continue to progress at the present rate If there is sufficient inducement in n rink tournament to induce 160 entries (640 players), it seems to some players that the pairs and singles (which are not taken very seriously in the North Ys land) might be cut out altogether. The proposal has its merits as. at present there are many players who enter for the singles, for instance, who. even on club form, have not a chance of reaching championship form. An alternative is provided in the system at present in vogue whereby centres find their champions. A meeting of the champion singles players of the ccyitr'V n-onld evoke considerable interest, but as this contest is now conducted, the interest in anything but the final games is negligible/ This question is not a new one. It cropped up at the Dominion Association’s general meeting at Christchurch last year. It will probably be revived during the present tournament, as it is becoming evident that the time occupied by all three contests is too lengthy a period to suit the majority of keen bowlers A “COME AGAIN” TOURNEY For the benefit of bowlers who have been "pipped” in the big rink tournament, the committee has arranged a “come again” tournament, which will give them two games to-day and two to-morrow. Entries will close at tne AA’er.ington Bowling Club at .9.15 a.m. to-day, after which the green allotted will be notified!, together with all arrangements for play. A small entrance fee wiil be charged. Only those not concerned in the finals of the big tournament are qualified to enter. “SKIPS” ENTERTAINED At the AVellington Bowling Club’s pavilion last evening some 200 local and visiting 'skips” of rinks were entertained royally by the president (Mr. M. A. Carr) and vice-president (Mr. Godfrey Magnus), of the AVellington Chib. There were only two toasts, viz., The King” and "The Game.” The latter toast was proposed by Mr. Carr, in which he eulogised the _ democratic spirit and cameracierei which marked the game of bowls the world over. Mr. T. Bush (president of the Dominion Bowling Association), for the executive, and Mr. Maxwell AValker, for the players, responded, the latter in a speech both witty and poetical. Musical and elocutionary items were provided by Messrs. E. J- Hill, AV. Goudie. Rupert Meate.s, Errol and Allan Fuller, and Fraser Thompson. Mr. H. Godier prcsicted nt flic pmuofortc. PinnllN the health of the hosts was proposed by Mr. N. Bell (Hamilton), who referred to the splendid time the bowCers from one end of the Dominion to the other were being given in AVellington.
