BOWLS TOURNEY
THIRD DAY’S PLAY BRILLIANT WEATHER CONTINUES WINS AND LOSSES TO DATE Fine weather continues to favour the bowlers. Yesterday was marked by glorious sunshine, tempered by a moderate north-westerly breeze, which had very little effect on the, run of the bowls nt. the majority of tho greens. The fifth and sixth rounds: in the rink contest were played yesterday, which leaves x>nly two more rounds of section play to be completed before the play-off between section winners. As the tournament ,wears on the interest continues to increase, and to-day should see some keen play in the struggle to get into the final play by those who are still in the running. No section can be won by a rink with fewer than six (out of eight) wins. After today’s play the full two-life system will be applied to all rinks left in. NOTES ON THE PLAY
Dimock, formerly of Thorndon, and now of Island Bay, had his first win yesterday morning, when he beat M'Farlane, of Seatoun. . Leatham is skipping in place of Bull in the Napier rink. J. Nash, Mayor of Palmerston North, a veteran tournament player, went down to Blackwood (Greymouth) yesterday morning. A number of the four-win skips went down with a bump in the fifth round yesterday morning, notably Porteous (M ellington), Roberts (Wellington). Dr. Adams (Blenheim), and Jackman (Wellington). Barnes (Hataitai) had an heroic struggle with Trevethick (Lower Hutt) yesterday morning, and after several dead heads the Hataitai man managed to pull it off. 25—22. Henderson (Lyttelton) is ploughing his way through, and looks every inch one of the final rinks. His team <s Qualifying in great style for the points supremacy. l Chegwin (of Beckenham, Christchurch) is doing very well. His rink is playing well, and the old skip is showing sound generalship in every game. It would be a queer bowling tournament without a Brackenridge concerned to uphold the honour of the Newtown Club. James, sent., has a good rink, and so far has gone through without a Joss. John, junr., is playing No. 3 for Flem. Laurenson (Alanawatu). Duncan (Wellington) is qualifying for the “go-slow” championship. His rink is consistently among the last to hand in its card. Duncan’s trick of following his bowl up the green is of recent growth. It is a habit he should get rid of. Bremner (Invercargill) has gone through so far without a loss. He has knocked at the door before, and looks like doing it again.
A big crowd watched l the game on the Wellington Green yesterday afternoon between the two unbeaten rinks skipped by- Spiller (Remuera) and Chegwin (Beckenham). Spiller was playing beautifullyand had luck with him, and his rink were a very solid support to him. After a long- game he won by a good margin. Sievwright (Wellington) surprised all his friends by- lowering his colours to Doneghue (Petone), who only has two wins to his credit out of the six games. He must not allow such things to happen in England. Powell (Eastbourne) is the only man with five wins in Section J. Churchward (formerly of 'Wellington) is playing three for the Eastbourne rink. J. Kilgour (Carlton), a veteran tournament player, is at the top of his section (1; with five wins.
Tyrrell (Lyall Bay), who came to iho front, at the tournament in Wellington two years ago, is showing the same good judgment and fighting spirit as then. lie leads Section E, with no losses. “Well, whichever way the game goes,” said a well-known Auckland bowler playing on the lower green at Wellington Club yesterday, “there are no complaints about the green—it is one of the most perfect greens I have ever played on.”
