MAGISTRATE’S COURT

A PROHIBITED IMMIGRANT. A short sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held yesterday morning, Air. F. K. Hunt, S.M., being on the bench. For using obscene language in Lamb- ■ ton Quay, John Garside was fined 40s. and for drunkenness he was fined a fur- - ther ss. Thomas Jefferson Dillon was charged with secreting himself on the s.s. Cape Natal without the consent of the owner, master, or mote. Dillon stowed away on '■ the vessel at San Francisco, and came to New Zealand. On this charge he was convicted and fined £lO, in default one month’s imprisonment. The Customs Department, also proceeded against Dillon and charged him with unlawfully ' landing in New Zealand, he being a prohibited immigrant. On this charge ho was remanded for a week, it being alieg- . ed that he was not sound mentally. . Martin J. Clancy was charged with failing to provide adequate maintenance for his wife and three children. Air. A. B Sievwright appeared for tha complainant, and Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell for the defendant. Clancy, it was alleged, left his home about ten months ago, and was recently discovered working as a steward on a steamer, under another name. After hearing evidence the Magistrate ordered defendant to contribute 255. per week towards tho support of tho three children.
