ALLEGED BOOKMAKING
I 9 A MAGISTRATE'S WARNING. Before Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., in the. Magistrate's Court yesterday, Jolm Martindnle (for whom Mr. H. F. O'Leaiy appeared) was charged that on divers dates between October 25 and December 28 he carried on business, as a bookmaker. Chief-Detective Ward - asked for a remand until January 6, which was grained, and bail was fixed in one surety of .£250. There was a second' charge against Martindalo of using the New Commercial Hotel a 6 a common gaming ; house.
Vincent Salvator Stanislaus, barman at the New Commercial Hotel, was charged that between November 20 and December 28, having use of the bar of tho New Commercial Hotel, he used the as a common gaming house. This ease was dealt with summarily, and tho* defendant pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective Ward said that Stanislaus had been employed as a barman at tho hotel for the past five or six months, and about the middle of last month lie started bookmgjdng in conjunction with his usual occupation. The diets lie made with customers were not considerable, and it was evident from the books and papers found in his possession that h9 did not know as much about the game M some of his customers. The "double book contained very few entries, which wns another indication thai! accused« business was small. The chief-dctcctiyo said lie did not wish the Magistrate to lake a very serious view of the case. Accused had little mcuey, and it was in his favour Chat ho was not making n living out of bookmaking. Mr. Hunt: Has he been betting,since tho previous cases were in court? The chief-detective: Bets were mad# up to yesterday. Ho asked for three months in which to pay the fine,"which was promptly refused. Ho was allowed .1 month itt which to iind the money.
