< HAN DISAPPEARS AT SUMNER. By Telegraph.—Press Association, Christchurch, December 29. What has the appearance of a case of . suicide occurred this morning at Sumt ner. A man who was on the pier announced his intention of "testing the [ depth of water" to a resident, who hast- " ened ib inform the police. This resident met another, who proceeded to the pier, but the man had disappeared, leav- ' ing behind part of his clothing. In a ' coat pocket was a P.O. Savings Bank book ' issued to John Baird, care J. Studholmo, Hinds; also money, notes, and silver.
