A MOTOR SPILL

» :— OYER THE PAEKAKARIKI HILL. Few holidays pass in "Wellington without an accident of somo sort on the Paekakariki Hill. On the afternoon 1 of Boxing Day, Mr. and Mrs. J. Downes, of Kolburn, with Mr. C. Whittiek, were on their way back to, town, and when halfway up the Paefcakarikii Hill Road a rear tyre blew out, oausing the car to skid, and before anything; could bo done the ear- pitched over the side of the road, and went tumbling down the Bteop declivity. Mr. Whittiek s jumped clear of the car, but Mr. Downes (who was driving) and Mrs. Downes! fell over with the vehicle, and were thrown out in the process, both being cut, ■ bruised, und severely shaken. Mr. Downes considered it fortunate that they both escaped bo lightly. His fall resulted in only a severe jolting, and a few scratches. Mre. Downos's elbow was injured, but it is not thought that any bones are broken. They, were brought to, town by another car, and taken to their home at Kelburn. Tho car, in a damaged condition, lies on the side of the hill, a considerable distance below the road. Earlier in the day, in the same locality, a large motor-car, going northwards, overtook a smaller car and collided with it, turning it over. Tho driver of the smaller car was cut and knockod about, and the car had to bo towed back to town. _^___^
