CUTTING COMMUNICATION WITH NEW ZEALAND

Sydney, December 21. The stewards of the steamer liirerina intend to tender their notices on AYednesday. This will completely cut off communication with New Zealand. Many New ZealanderS aro stranded. Mr. Monto, secretary of the Stewards' Union, replying to Mr. Justice Higgius, states that the Judge is only heaping coals of tiro. i« viden the breach. He recently suggested that'the union should take a. plobiscito to ascertain whether the. members should be allowed to settle their own dispute or not.

Forty or fifty ex-service immigrants, •with their wives and families, en route to New Zealand, stranded us a result of the strike, have been granted an allowance by the New Zealand Government office .to enable them to live until they can continue the voyage. It is estimated that two thousand marine stewards are on strike, und tho numbers are daily increasing. :V cablo message lias been received from the Marine Stewards' Federation in England offering to support the Australian Union. 'i'lve Union Company, dispatched tho Mceraki for Hobart this aftervoon. The stewards did not give notice, as the vessel was ready for sea before it could have expired. Following the strike of stewards, the Tasmu'nian coastal owners have withdrawn the agreement made with tho Seamen's Union. The latter now threaten to cut oft' ail steamer services fr«ra Sydney and Melbourne and Tasmania.—Press Assn.
EVERYTHING NORMAL AT WELLINGTON.
It appears il\at the" Chvistclnirch message whiclr stated that a conference was to be held in "Wellington on.Monday was incorrect, as Mr. W. A. Kennedy (malinger for the Union Steam Ship Company) yesterday informed a reporter that no conferoncc had-been held or was to liavo been lield. The Maori got away for Lyttelton, as usual, last evening, and up to the present nothing lias occurred in "Wellington to .indicate-a possibility of the extension of the' trouble to this port. The Arbitration Court lias not yet delivered its decision on the union's application for a bonns of £2 a month.
