DOMESTIC TRAGEDY
* WIFE SHOT, BY HER HUSBAND. ' Sydney, December 18. : Major Labarte, a returned soldier, shot his wife dead at Mossvale, jand also shot a policeman dead. A number of police were kept at bay for a couple of hours before Labarte could be arrested.—Press As 611. (Rec. December 19, 5.5 p.m.) Sydney, December 19. s Since his return from the war Major Labarte had suffered from pains in. the head, and has been strange in his manner. After shooting liis wife in the presence of her maid, ho telephoned to the police, and informed litem of the tragedy. When they arrived he opened fire upon them, and shot Constable Mitchell dead. Reinforcemfuta surrounded the house, but were kept at bay by Labarte's fusillade. Eventually a constable managed to effect an entrance while Labarte was watching the other police, and, escaping two shots discharge! at him as lie closed, he managed |to overpower Labarte, after a desperate struggle.—Press Assn. f
